Doc Magus in the Multiverse of Madness

Someday I’ll manage to cover literally every single aspect of the MC2 and wrap up this blog, but today is not that day. No, for today’s entry I wanted to detail a previously unknown (to me) appearance for Doc Magus aka Dormagus in the Marvel Multiverse. Specifically, Doc Magus in the 616 aka the Main Marvel Universe. Sorry about the clickbait-y title, I couldn’t resist!

Doctor Strange and the Sorcerers Supreme was a series released from 2016 to 2017 following the Main Marvel Universe’s Doctor Strange teaming up with various other characters who have at some point in their time or reality carried the mantle of the Sorcerer Supreme, including a young Yao who would later be known as The Ancient One, the mentor of Doctor Strange and many others.

At the conclusion of the series (Doctor Strange and the Sorcerers Supreme #12), Yao is faced with the seemingly impossible task of by completing the Trials of the Worthy in order to obtain The Cup of Eternity which will extend his life (hence the later title of Ancient One) and is aided in this task by Doctor Strange’s team of Sorcerers Supreme. Meanwhile, guided by a book known as The History of the Supremes, the mysterious Merlin (also apparently at one time a Sorcerer Supreme) disappears to recuit more help.

With the aid of his fellow Sorcerers the young Yao makes his way through various obstacles until finding himself unable to pierce the magical barrier preventing him from reaching the Well of Longing within which lay the Cup of Eternity. Fortunately, Merlin returns with a large group of Sorcerers Supreme from across time and realities.

Nestled among this assemblage of Sorcerers Supreme is the MC2’s very own Doc Magus aka Dormagus, alongside such characters as 2099’s Stranger, the Main Marvel Universe’s Clea and Baron Mordo and the future Guardian of the Galaxy’s Krugarr. Using the groups combined magical might concentrated through Merlin who wielded the last Word of God, the magical barrier was broken allowing Yao to go and fulfil his destiny.

Before heading into the cave containing the Well of Longing and ultimately the Cup of Eternity, all the Sorcerers present showed their respect to their future master with a bow. Yao apologized for the fact he would never mention this to any of them when he would later meet them in his future. Merlin shortly afterwards returned the Sorcerers to their rightful places.

While this is merely a cameo appearance, I do like that Dormagus is represented here as he is the MC2’s own Sorcerer Supreme. This appearance also suggests that perhaps Merlin has read about Doc Magus’ fate in The History of the Supremes. Furthermore, the way Doctor Strange explains to Yao that he lives long enough to teach all of the Sorcerers Supreme present certainly requires exploring. Doctor Strange is probably speaking metaphorically as Dormagus and others such as Krugarr and the Stranger were born after the lifespan of the Ancient One, with his teachings being passed on to future generations, his legacy.

Until I stop digging up, digging into and just plain digging these little MC2 related details, I remain

Hulk in the MC2

With all the build up for Avengers: Endgame, I've elected to cover the MC2 incarnations of the films main cast. For this entry, we'll be looking at the green-skinned giant himself, the Incredible Hulk!

Bruce Banner makes his MC2 debut in A-Next #3 where we learn that he's retired to Denver, Colorado and has a son named David. Bruce indicates he is finally rid of his alter ego for good and hasn't seen Doctor Strange in years. When Strange appears unexpectedly to reform the Defenders, he takes complete mental control of Banner and forces Bruce to once more transform into the Hulk.

Pitted against the newly formed next generation of Avengers, Hulk remains under Dr Strange's control until a hit from Stinger's...erm...stingers breaks him free of the spell (A-Next #3). It's also worth mentioning that this is where Dr Strange informs Doc Magus that the Hulk has a destiny to fulfill. While the action ends there, J2 #3 expands on the fight between J2 and the incredible Hulk and ends with the two demonstrating mutual respect for one another.

It seems Banner is back to transforming into the not-so-jolly green giant but he appears to maintain some control over the Hulk if not retaining all of his intelligence, as he shows up in J2 #12, accompanying his fellow Defenders into the Crossroads of Infinity on a mission to rescue J2 and Doc Magus and the original Juggernaut and in Wild Thing #0 helping Wolverine, Dr Strange and Wild Thing against a pack of Wendigos.

After this though, the Hulk doesn't appear for a while, finally re-emerging in Spider-Girl #86-88 where he briefly battles Apox the Omega Skrull before being sent into space. There he is rescued by the Earth Sentry and Nova and accompanies them to the Skrull Worldship and is present when the Skrulls surrender.

Anyone who's read some of my recent posts knows what happens next. During the events of Last Hero Standing, Hulk is enthralled by Loki's spell and goes on a rampage against several of the Earth's heroes. Finally freed when Captain America breaks Loki's connection, Hulk narrowly avoids death at Thor's hands. Devastated by the fresh destruction he has wrought after his years rebuilding his life, the Hulk joins Loki as he is exiled to Limbo by Thor.

Now, that should have been the last time we see the Hulk in the MC2, but eagle eyed readers may have noticed a magical energy duplicate created by Sylene in Avengers Next #4-#5. Either this is an artistic error or confirmation that the Hulk found a way back to Earth. After all, Hulk is strongest one there is!

Hulk's exile leaves it up in the air who's looking after his son, David. Perhaps Betty Banner (formerly Betty Ross) is alive and well in this reality? Perhaps Bruce's cousin She-Hulk is raising her nephew? We may never know!

Until I find a form of gamma radiation that turns my genes green, I remain

The Hulk's Destiny

Reading and re-reading the various MC2 comics sometimes yields small and unexpected nuggets, facts and tidbits. For example, when Doctor Strange reforms the original Defenders in A-Next #3, we learn a little about what's happened to Stephen Strange, Namor and the Incredible Hulk in the past 15 years. Doctor Strange has been stripped of his role as Sorcerer Supreme under unrevealed circumstances and replaced by the youthful Doc Magus. Prince Namor the Sub-Mariner has seen his kingdom Atlantis destroyed by Doctor Doom, whom Namor is believed to have killed soon after in a fierce battle. Meanwhile Dr Bruce Banner, better known to the world as the monstrous Hulk has settled down in the suburbs to raise his son, David. That is, of course, until Doctor Strange shows up...

After the Defenders clash with the new Avengers team, Doc Magus questions why Strange orchestrated the encounter. Despite giving his reasons and explanations for everything else, when it comes to the Hulk Doctor Strange simple says 'He has a destiny to fulfill.'

Nothing really comes of this statement for several years until Last Hero Standing #5 when the Hulk- after wreaking havoc while mind-controlled by Loki in the latter's attempt to bring about an end to the 'Age of Heroes'- takes out his revenge on the Asgardian god for ruining his formerly happy life.

So, was this the Hulk's destiny: being banished to everlasting Limbo with good ol' Loki? Or perhaps this prophesized destiny has yet to be completed? Was there more to Doctor Strange's  machinations than we know? Maybe it's nothing and I'm simply overthinking things...again.

Until I find run out of things to love in the MC2, I remain

Wouldn't it be Neat?

Have you ever been going about your everyday business only to have a random idea about your favorite piece of fiction come floating into the forefront of your mind? I know I have. Wouldn't it be neat if this or that happened? Maybe you've got a nifty explanation for a continuity snafu or a great hero/villain story or a new quest for your intrepid hero to venture forth upon? Here's a few I've had rattling around recently.

Wouldn't it be neat if Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos did a Spider-Girl story?

I'd love to see Ramos' take on this particular web-swinger, having enjoyed his recent stuff on Superior Spider-man and Amazing Spider-man before that. His style currently is, I believe, the best it's ever been. Slott's love of continuity and using obscure characters could really bring out something sensational.

Wouldn't it be neat if the Romita's drew the MC2?

I know, technically John Romita Jr has drawn MC2 characters before, but that was for one background image on a splash page in an Avengers story. I'm talking full-blown cover-to-cover work from the both, Senior and Junior. They draw some of the best Spidey stuff in my opinion and I'd love to see JRJR's J2 get some panel time.

Do ya seem 'em?

Wouldn't it be neat if La Fantome became a bigger threat?

Think about it: As the descendent of the Spider-Slayer creators and with her established schtick of being a Mysterio type spooky villain, Stacy Smythe could become a huge threat amongst Spider-Girl's rogues. Just sayin', it could be done.

Wouldn't it be neat if we found out what happened to the X-Men?

Of all the superhero teams in the MC2, the fate of the original mutant team is the biggest mystery. We know at some point they saved the world, gaining a little acceptance in the process, but most appearances of the X-People imply they are more withdrawn from society currently. So, what happened? Who's still alive? Why is Jubilee the leader of the next generation of mutants? I'd love a mini series for the X-People.

Wouldn't it be neat if Doc Magus was the son of Doctor Strange and Clea?

This ones pretty self explanatory. We don't know a great deal about him or how he became the current Sorcerer Supreme, or why Stephen Strange is no longer worthy of that title. Strange and Clea have a long history together. There's lots of story potential there, parental issues and all.
