MC2 Legacy: Did Mainframe Influence the MCU Iron Man?

This will hopefully be the first instalment in a new occasional series touching on the various instances of an MC2 character, concept or…whatever that is later used elsewhere. Basically, a record of the many times the MC2 has influenced the comic’s Main Marvel Universe, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a variety of animated series, etc.

Many years ago, I wrote about the MC2’s Mainframe being loosely adapted in the Marvel animated series Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. which led to a follow up post and a short video. The episode, ‘Wheels of Fury’, debuted on the 29th of March 2015 and concludes with the Mainframe Artificial Intelligence taking on a familiar yellow and black armoured form resembling his MC2 design.

But this wasn’t the first time we’d seen Iron Man himself in a yellow and black armoured suit. The Iron Man: Armored Adventures episode ‘Fun with Lasers’ which first aired on the 4th of September 2009 debut’s the teenage Tony Stark’s ‘Space Armor’ when he uses it to reach a hijacked S.H.I.E.L.D. Orbital Station.

Some might argue that this is a reference to the ‘Iron Man Armor Model 42’ which was the first Iron Man Armor to feature the yellow and black colour scheme. However, the Model 42 didn’t debut until years later with Iron Man (Vol. 5) #1 in November 2012.

One of the dozens of Iron Man Armors seen in the climax of the 2013 Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Iron Man 3, the Mark 20 or Mark XX also known by the nickname ‘Python’ is believed to be inspired by the above-mentioned Model 42. Additionally, it also appears in the official Iron Man 3 mobile tie-in video game from Gameloft, thus making the leap to yet another medium.

Thus, I’d argue they are all in some way originally inspired by Ron Frenz and Rich Yanizeski’s frankly classic Mainframe designs which debuted all the way back in A-Next #1 from 1998. Here’s an excerpt of what co-creator and artist extraordinaire Ron Frenz had to say about the design of Mainframe on episode 744 of Adam Chapman’s Comic Shenanigan’s podcast:

We went through a couple of different designs, the early designs still had red and yellow in them and everything. I’ll be perfectly honest with you, what occurred to me about what I like about black and gold is that I’m from Pittsburgh and that’s the colour of all of our sports teams.

The Evolution of Mainframe in Animation

I decided there might be just enough to make a third video in the series. So here is Mainframe's two appearances in Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. I mean he does evolve and change, so that's gotta count for something, right?

Mainframe Returns to Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.

Marvel has tweeted a clip of the upcoming season two finale to Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. which features a gathering of animated universes various heroes including the series iteration of Mainframe.

The Agents of S.M.A.S.H. series previously introduced the animated version of the MC2's own Mainframe in the Season 2, episode 18 'Wheels of Fury' where he was voiced by Jeffrey Combs. Appearing initially as an artificial intelligence created by Tony Stark, at the conclusion of that episode, he took on a form resembling his armored MC2 design.

The season two finale of Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.  is titled 'Planet Monster (part 2)' and is set to be broadcast on June 28th on Disney XD.

Until American Dream shows up in a Captain America Corps animated series voiced by Tara Strong, I remain

Felicity Hardy Confirmed for Spider-Man Unlimited

Well, after the current Mysterio update for the Spider-Man Unlimited mobile game, I think it's safe to confirm Felicity Hardy, aka the MC2's own Scarlet Spider will soon be a playable character. Don't believe me? Take a look for yourself:

The Spider-Man Unlimited facebook page gives her debut event dates:

June 15th – 21st
New Spidey: Scarlet Spider (Felicity Hardy)
Event:  Release Event (Titan)

Well, there ya go then. Who's next, Gameloft? There is a nice trend starting up recently of MC2 characters popping up all over the place in unexpected ways! Mainframe in Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. and Hope Pym appearing in some form in the upcoming Ant-Man movie. Spider-Girl and now Felicity Hardy in the Spider-Man Unlimited game. Maybe there is something to that?

Mainframe in Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.

It's been brought to my attention that A-Next's own Armored Avenger, Mainframe recently made something of an appearance in the Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. animated series. Mainframe is voiced by Jeffrey Combs.

Mainframe appears in Season 2, episode 18 'Wheels of Fury' as an Artificial Intelligence created by Tony Stark to play games against. Iron Man, Hulk and gang end up in a high stakes game of Roller Derby against Mainframe. At the conclusion of the episode, Mainframe determines that humanity has many games to offer, taking on a familiar armored form similar to his MC2 design and setting out to discover the world.

I don't really have a strong opinion about the series, as this was the only episode I've ever seen. My interest is certainly piqued by the use of a MC2 character in animated form, considering May 'Mayday' Parker was passed up for the derivative gender-swapped 'Petra Parker' in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series.

Until the entire MC2 makes an appearance in another medium, I remain
