Is Devil Dinosaur in the MC2?

 

Here’s a fun idea I’ve been chewing over for a while now: What characters could exist in the MC2, but where never seen, referenced or perhaps simply weren’t introduced into Marvel Comics until afterwards? I’ve previously produced a post pondering this proposal when I looked at one of the members of the Guardians of the Galaxy to see if Groot could potentially exist in the MC2. For today, I wanted to take a bite out of another character I’m fond of, to see if Devil Dinosaur could exist in the MC2?

First, we must consider some rules, ironic though it may seem for a thought experiment such as this. Usually the MC2’s point of divergence, ‘cut off point’ or ‘branching point,’ is comics published after 1998, when the MC2 imprint began publication. There have been exceptions to this, with some characters who were created after this point appearing in the MC2, such as Anya Corazón aka Araña. With regards to Devil Dinosaur, we have a very different issue to consider.

 

Created by the king of comics himself, Jack Kirby, Devil first appeared in Devil Dinosaur #1 from 1978. Devil is a mutant tyrannosaurus-like theropod dinosaur of the species known as ‘Devil-Beasts’ (Fallen Angels #4). While Mr Kirby’s intent was for Devil and his ‘Small-Folk’ hominid companion Moon Boy to hail from the distant past of the Main Marvel Universe or Earth-616, it’s now firmly established that they originate from an alternate Earth known as ‘Dinosaur World’, which is officially and in-universe designated as Earth-78411 (The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe (vol. 1) #3, The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Deluxe Edition #7, The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Update ’89 #2, The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Master Edition #8,Marvel Monsters: From the Files of Ulysses Bloodstone (and the Monster Hunters) and so on). With all that information as support, it’s safe to say Devil Dinosaur is not native to the 616 Universe. So, does that rule him out of the MC2 Universe also?

 

Fortunately, Devil has traversed the multiverse on multiple occasions, in addition to interacting with visitors to his world from the 616 including Godzilla via Doctor Doom’s Time Platform (Godzilla #21-#22). Devil and Moon Boy have also encountered various others including a Skrull (Devil Dinosaur Spring Fling #1),Lockheed (and nearly Shadowcat) of Excalibur (Marvel Comics Present #174), Ghost Rider and Howard the Duck (Ghost Rider (vol. 3) #81-#83), Wolverine, Namor the Sub-Mariner and Ka-Zar (Wolverine: Global Jeopardy #1) and the Fallen Angels group which included members of the New Mutants team (Fallen Angels #4-#8).

 

One significant story came in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man Annual ’98 (aka ‘Annual #31’) written by none other than Spider-Girl co-creator Tom Defalco. This story saw the duo of Moon Boy and Devil Dinosaur stranded once again on Earth-616 and this time under the hypnotic influence of the Ringmaster of Crime. After Spider-Man liberated the pair, he suggested their relocation to the Savage Land where they were settled soon after.

 

Not only is this story written by MC2 alumni Tom Defalco, but it was also published in 1998 making it a likely inclusion into our hypothetical pre-MC2-publication cut off point. So, could Devil Dinosaur reside in the MC2? Yes, it is possible Devil and Moon Boy remain secluded in the remote Savage Land of Antarctica. Considering no published MC2 stories have visited the Savage Land, I’d like to think Devil and his friend are still out there…

Wakandan Technology in the MC2: Wakandan Airship

 

While I am late to the party (as I often am) I still wanted to offer a short post tangentially related to the recent Eyes of Wakanda mini-series. Here is that post, a kind of cousin to the Spider-Symmetry and Patriotic Parallels posts, but without a set name just yet (any suggestions welcome!).

 

The world is first introduced to T’Challa aka The Black Panther in Fantastic Four #52 when a snazzy Wakandan Airship (identified as a Magnetic Wave Rider) greets the Fantastic Four and whisks them away to the nation of Wakanda.

 

Reed would test a new model of the Magnetic Wave Rider sent by the Black Panther in Giant-Size Super-Stars #1. As an aside, it’s obvious the Magnetic Wave Rider influenced the Black Panther movie’s Maglev Trains concept.

 

In the MC2, the next generation of Avengers are introduced to the son of The Black Panther, Prince T’Chaka aka The Coal Tiger in A-Next #4. As confirmed by Ron Frenz on Adam Chapman’s podcast Comic Shenanigans Episode 744, a version of the Magnetic Wave Rider returns for this Wakandan related story:

 

‘It’s one of the Wakandan Ships. It was originally Kirby’s design for a Wakandan Airship that the Fantastic Four then had a model that they hung on to. Since we were dealing with Wakanda I thought it would be kind of cool to throw it in there.’

 

Now, I think it’s worth mentioning that the text and dialogue in the comic does explicitly refer to this aircraft as a ‘Quinjet’. However, given Ron’s statement and the obvious visual similarity to the Magnetic Wave Rider and the discontinuity with the design of the Quinjet’s seen in other issues of A-Next, we need to develop a No-Prize explanation.

 

I submit the following: Given the vehicle is adorned with the Avengers livery, and the Black Panther is credited with earlier Quinjet designs, and considering the outward resemblance to the Wakandan Magnetic Wave Rider gifted to the Fantastic Four, the aircraft seen in A-Next #4 is a new version of the  Magnetic Wave Rider equipped with quinjets (meaning five jets) developed by T’Challa, perhaps as a gift to his former team. The Avengers colloquially refer to their various air vessels as Quinjets, and technically this would also count, which explains their referring to it as such.

 

Either way, it’s a great little reference to the past from Mr Ron Frenz and helps further the connection between Wakanda’s Royal Family and the Avengers. Let’s hope J2 has learnt how to fly by now!

The Thing in the MC2

 

Marvel Studios’ has released The Fantastic Four: First Steps in cinema, and I’m inspired to keep delving into the MC2 Universe’s own founding members of the Fantastic Four …. or the Fantastic Five, as they are now known in this world. For today, let’s look at Aunt Petunia’s ever-lovin’ baby blue-eyed Ben Grimm aka The Thing in the MC2.

 

All four core members of Marvel’s First Family debuted in Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s 1961 title Fantastic Four #1, launching the very Marvel Universe itself as we know it today by depicting the fateful space launch which gave this famous four their powers.  Poor Ben got the rough end of the deal, being permanently rendered rocky in appearance.

 

Just like Johnny Storm, Benjamin Grimm made his first appearance within the MC2 in the story which launched a new universe in the pages of What If #105. While it’s only a cameo appearance, it does give us our first glimpse of the MC2’s Fantastic Five and we see that Ben’s left side is now metallic.

 

It’s not long until the Fantastic Five make their full debut in the pages of Spider-Girl #3 battling Spyral. We learn Johnny now leads this new team comprised of Reed Richards aka Big Brain, Franklin Richards aka Psi-Lord, Lyja Storm aka Ms. Fantastic and , of course Ben Grimm aka The Thing.

 

   

Here’s the MC2-specific events in The Thing’s past. While we don't know the exact point at which the history of the Main Marvel Universe Fantastic Four stops being the same as that of the MC2 Fantastic Four/Five, we do know a few things about the team’s history. While it's unclear exactly when, Ben Grimm and Sharon Ventura married and had twins named Alyce and Jacob Grimm (Fantastic Five Vol. 1 #1, #3, #5).

 

During a battle with the villainous Terrax, Ben Grimm aka The Thing had the rock-like hide torn from much of the left side of his body by a miniature black hole. Reed Richards created bionic armour to cover the exposed tissue but explained it could take years to regenerate his missing hide. As a side effect of his bionics in situ, it would be impossible for Ben to revert to his human form (Fantastic Five Vol. 2 #1- #2).

*I think I should point out the slight continuity error in the flashback above: Other flashbacks depicting events occurring after the one above clearly show the team wearing F4 uniforms and operating under the name Fantastic Four. Likely, the F5 uniforms are a simple oversight or artistic error*

 

Approximately five or so years prior to the events of Fantastic Five Vol. 1 #1, the Fantastic Four prepared to battle Hyperstorm, a cosmically powered warlord from an alternate future who had built a doomsday weapon in the Negative Zone (Fantastic Five Vol. 1 #4, Spider-Girl #87). Lyja was pregnant at this time and did not join the team on their mission, meanwhile Sharon and Ben argued about Ben remaining behind with their twins, though Ben insisted he had to go for everyone’s sake (Fantastic Five Vol. 1 #4). Franklin engaged Hyperstorm in a 'mind-war' on every plane of existence which ultimately left Hyperstorm comatose and apparently stripped Franklin of much of his god-like power (Fantastic Five Vol. 1 #4).

 Unfortunately, the doomsday device had already begun to tear a hole in the fabric of reality. When Reed Richards was forced to overload the device to stop it, Susan Richards attempted to shield him from the radiation with her force field. Caught in the blast radius, half of Reed's body was left in a melted and deformed state. With the reality rip still widening, Susan used her powers to hold the tear in place, with the strain leaving her in a coma and she was placed in suspended animation.

 

In the wake of the tragedy, The Fantastistation was built in the Negative Zone around the tear in reality. This allowed Reed to keep Sue company while she remained in suspended animation as he worked to slowly repair the hole in the fabric of reality (Fantastic Five Vol. 1 #4, Spider-Girl #87). Over the next few months, while the Fantastic Four remained in seclusion, rumours and speculation spread about the fate of Susan Richards despite the team never releasing details to the public. Reed developed the Big Brain robot to allow him to remain on the team by remotely controlling it from the Negative Zone (Fantastic Five Vol. 1 #1).

 

The team formally changed their charter, membership and name, finally re-branding themselves as the Fantastic Five, with John Storm aka The Human Torch leading the team of Ms. Fantastic aka his wife Lyja Storm; Ben Grimm aka The Thing; Reed Richards as Big Brain and Franklin Richards now known as Psi-Lord (Fantastic Five Vol. 1 #1, Fantastic Five Vol. 2 #1).

 

It's not stated exactly when it occurred, but prior to the present day, Ben and Sharon divorced and Ben hadn’t seen the twins Alyce and Jacob for some months (Fantastic Five Vol. 1 #2 - #3). It’s a difficult position in which Ben Grimm finds himself in but he takes it on and keeps going as always.
